Angel's Share
A new play

Angel's Share is a play about Micah Kaminsky and his struggle to survive as a blue collar worker in the steel town of Pittsburgh. The play is set in the late 1970's. It evolves amidst the background of the beginning of the end of the rapid degradation of the Steel Industry in this Pennsylvania city. Micah's family life mirrors this decay. Micah is uprooted from his daily routine by being laid off, having his brother Josef incarcerated, being pressured further with the death of his father Louie and eventually becoming separated from his wife, Margie, and his child, Tyler. It is his journey toward acceptance of change. In the end, Micah begins to redefine who he is by understanding what is truly important to him.

A directed reading of Angel's Share was held at the University Club on Sunday April 25th, 1999, and was very well received. This reading of Angel's Share was part of the fundraising event sponsored by The National Society of Arts and Letters, Pittsburgh Chapter. The event raised $21,000 to help young artists in the pursuit of their craft.

WHAT IS THE ANGEL'S SHARE?

This excerpt is taken from the play and best explains what it means.

JOE (laughs to himself)
The Angel's Share...you put wine in a barrel so you can age it...You leave it in there for several years. Each year, you lose a certain amount...that's due to the wine evaporating through the sides of the wooden barrel..THIS.....is known as THE ANGEL'S SHARE. The same as you age, that piece of you... chunk of time...life...disappears. But, with wine, every year you get to top off the barrel with more wine. For there must never be an empty space. We aren't so lucky.

MICAH
You wanna know what I have left of Dad? The Mossberg, his black reading glasses...his U S steel watch.....that cheap multi-band mail order GE radio he used to listen to the Pirate games with... and a picture, of him sitting up... smiling...with a white t-shirt on... in his favorite lazy boy recliner. (beat) That's it. His life. What a joke! (beat) God, I miss him.

JOE
So do I, Micah. So do I.
